What the mountain offers, season to season.

On the trails

Hiking, first of all

Pyramid Mountain is a hiker's park. More than 19 miles of natural-surface trails climb the ridges and cross the swamps; the park is hiking-only, with no mountain biking, rock climbing, or fishing permitted, which keeps the trails quiet underfoot. Leashed dogs are welcome on a six-foot leash. Trails are open from sunrise to sunset year-round.

What to see

Glacial geology & the overlooks

The park's signature outing is a tour of its glacial erratics — Tripod Rock, Bear Rock, and Whale Head Rock — house-sized boulders left by the last ice age. The high ground rewards the climb too: the 934-foot summit ridge and the eastern overlooks give long views across the Highlands, and on a clear day the Manhattan skyline rises on the horizon. It is some of the best landscape photography in Morris County.

Wild things

Birding & wildlife

Bear Swamp and the mixed Highlands forest make Pyramid Mountain a strong spot for birding and wildlife watching through the seasons — spring migration in the wetlands, summer in the laurel, and open sightlines once the leaves drop. Spring wildflowers and mountain laurel in bloom are a draw in their own right.

The park is more than scenery: its ridges and valleys feed downstream reservoirs and aquifers, and it shelters plants and animals uncommon in New Jersey, including state-listed threatened and endangered species. Tread lightly and keep to the blazed trails.

Year-round

Winter, programs & the visitor center

The trails stay open through winter for cold-weather hiking and snowshoeing when conditions allow. The Morris County Park Commission runs the park's visitor center near the trailhead, with natural-history exhibits and seasonal naturalist-led programs. Visitor-center hours vary by season, so check the official park page before you count on it being open.
