Women Who Shaped KinnelonMary Kinney

The devout wife for whom Francis Kinney raised an island chapel — Kinnelon's first Catholic church, finished by the hand of Tiffany.

A whole chapel stands because of her faith. Mary Kinney was the devout Catholic wife of Francis S. Kinney — and so that she would not have to travel seven miles to the nearest Catholic church, her husband built her one of her own, on an island in the lake, and had Louis Comfort Tiffany decorate it. Her fuller story is one we are still working to document.

Documented

The chapel built for her faith

Mary Kinney was the devout Catholic wife of Francis S. Kinney, the Sweet Caporal cigarette magnate whose estate became Smoke Rise. The nearest Catholic church was St. Anthony of Padua in Butler, some seven miles away — so that she would not have to make that journey to worship, her husband built St. Hubert's Chapel for her on an island in Lake Kinnelon, its cornerstone laid in 1886 and the chapel consecrated in 1889. He had it decorated by the Tiffany Glass Company, in what became Louis Comfort Tiffany's first liturgical commission. It was Kinnelon's first Catholic church.

Not to be confused with…

Kinnelon's history holds two Mary Kinneys. This is Mary Kinney, Francis's wife. She should not be confused with Mary Cogswell Kinney, his mother — the friend of Mary Todd Lincoln whose tomb angel now stands inside the very chapel built for the wife.

We publish only what we can confirm, and we'll add to her story as it's verified. If you hold a record that can help, we'd be glad to hear from you.
